The upcoming closure you'll want to know about if you use the Grand Island bridges

Posted at 4:24 AM, Nov 15, 2018

This weekend, the southbound lanes of the South Grand Island Bridge will be closed.

The closure begins at 5 a.m. Saturday and wraps up at 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Thruway Authority. But work is scheduled to begin Friday at 8 p.m. with alternating lane closures.

During the closure, all southbound traffic on I-190 will be shifted into a single-lane configuration on the northbound South Grand Island Bridge. Overhead lane designation signals will be used to safely direct traffic.

During this scheduled work period, contractors will be using specialized equipment to grind the road surface on the bridge. The Thruway Authority said this will increase safety during inclement weather.
