State Police say a 17-year-old escaped while in custody on Tuesday and shot a trooper's gun.

Troopers arrested Gavin Haynes of Machias on a criminal trespass charge earlier in the day. After his arraignment in the Town of Machias Court he broke away from the trooper's grip while handcuffed behind his back and ran away.

Police say the trooper quickly caught up with him and tackled him to the ground. While the trooper was trying to regain control, his gun came undone from his holster. Haynes rolled onto his back where the gun was loose, took the gun and fired one shot into a snowbank.

There were no injuries.

Haynes was then charged with robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and escape, all felony charges. He is being tried as an adult because of the severity of his crimes.
