A teenage mother has been sentenced to nine years in prison for abandoning her infant daughter in a trash bag in the Southern Tier.
Harriette Hoyt of Sayre, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to attempted murder. Authorities say in August, Hoyte -- then 17 -- left her 8-month-old baby outside an Elmira home in a plastic bag.
Neighbors discovered the baby three days later. The child spent 10 days in a Rochester hospital before being placed in foster care.
In court, Hoyt's lawyer said she was very sorry. He also admitted that her being diagnosed with postpartum depression didn't excuse her actions.
