Police are searching for the driver of an SUV that went airborne and crashed through the roof of a California home overnight Tuesday.

At about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday a married couple in the 1600 block of Hubbard Place in Escondido was awakened when a BMW X5 landed through the roof of their garage.

Escondido firefighters arrived and removed the BMW. The couple was asleep on the other side of the home and was not hurt.

“My wife thought it was an earthquake, she was really freaked out,” homeowner George Strother said. “I didn't even notice it. I think I had probably just fallen asleep again at the moment it happened.  So, I didn't hear the big noise that she did.”

The crash damaged a Nissan Pathfinder and a Mazda Miata that were parked in the garage.

Escondido police have not provided any details on the circumstances of the crash, the investigation or the search for the suspect.
