State surcharge raises cost of electric bills

and last updated

Your electric bill is about to go up and you thank the State for that.

A new surcharge will be tacked on to electric bills beginning April 1 that will raise residential customers' payments an extra $1.50 to $3 a month.

The subsidies are meant to help keep the upstate nuclear plants open. These plants - FitzPatrick, Ginna and Nine Mile Point - are among the oldest operating nuclear plants in the country and their operating costs rise as they age.

These surcharges are expected to stay in place until a clean energy option can be presented.
