State Police stepping up enforcement of 'Move Over' law

Not aware of what New York's "Move Over" law requires you to do? The state is on a mission to change that by the end of this week.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has launched a week-long campaign to raise awareness of the law, which requires all drivers to slow down and safely move into another lane when approaching police, emergency vehicles, tow trucks and construction vehicles.

The law was recently expanded to also include garbage and recycling trucks.

From now through Friday, troopers patrolling the Thruway will be cracking down on drivers who fail to move into another lane while passing any of these vehicles.

In addition, PSAs will be airing statewide highlighting the importance of the 'Move Over' law to viewers.

Officials say two recent deadly crashes demonstrate the importance of this campaign.

A tow truck operator was killed on October 10th while helping the driver of a disabled vehicle on the Thruway in Montgomery County.

On October 28th, a construction equipment operator for the Thruway Authority was killed while working in Herkimer County.
