Sen. pushes for funds for new veterans' cemetery

Sen. Charles Schumer says he'll start pushing Veterans Affairs officials to make sure funding for the construction phase of a new national veterans' cemetery planned for western New York is given a priority.

The New York Democrat says the cemetery planned for the Genesee County town of Pembroke is now in the planning and design stages, which are set to wrap up by the end of 2016. Schumer says the VA has yet to determine the funding for construction, scheduled to start in 2017.

The senator is urging the agency to include that funding in its upcoming budget request for the 2017 fiscal year so there's no delay between phases.

It was announced in 2012 that a new cemetery would be built on 132 acres in Pembroke, between Rochester and Buffalo.
