New York state is expanding treatment for addiction in underserved areas upstate.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced $1 million in funding to support "peer outreach" programs that help addicts who show up in hospital emergency rooms as well as services that assist families seeking help for loved ones struggling with addiction.

The money will go toward areas in the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, North Country and western New York. Each county will receive $250,000.

Cuomo says the funding is "one more step" in the state's efforts to address addiction and substance abuse.
