New York state will raise the minimum wage for state university workers to $15.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the increase at a rally Monday in Manhattan in support of his legislative push to gradually increase the minimum to $15 minimum for all workers in the state.

The increase at the State University of New York system will affect some 28,000 employees when fully phased in during 2021.

The Democratic governor used his executive authority last year to approve a series of increases for workers at chain fast-food restaurants and state workers that will ultimately give them a $15 minimum.

The state's base minimum wage rose from $8.75 to $9 on Thursday.

State lawmakers will debate Cuomo's proposal to increase it to $15 during the 2016 session, which starts Wednesday.
