Former state police investigator dies from cancer related to 9/11 assignment

NEW YORK (WKBW) — Former New York State police investigator Ryan D. Fortini died January 1st, 2020 from cancer related to his assignment following the 9/11 terror attacks, New York State police announced Thursday.

Fortini was assigned to aid with the search and recovery efforts in New York City following the 9/11 terror attacks as part of the New York State police detail.

State police said Fortini retired from the NYSP on July 15th, 2015 after 16 years of service because of his worsening illness.

During his time with NYSP, Fortini was assigned to Troop K which covers the counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester.

He also served as part of the Community Narcotics Enforcement Team in the Hudson Valley.

Fortini is survived by his fiance, parents, brother, and sister.
