New York State veterans could soon have access to medical marijuana as a treatment option.
The House voted on Thursday to allow the option in states where medical marijuana is already legal. It was part of a larger spending bill that was passed by the Senate.
Bill sponsors believe the drug will help veterans manage chronic pain and PTSD, as well as be a better alternative to opioids.
Although the measure allows doctors to recommend the treatment option, it does not allow VA to provide medical marijuana for veterans or cover costs.
Final passage of the spending bill will need to be approved by the president.
