Blowing snow from lake-effect storms closed a stretch of the westbound lanes of the state Thruway in western New York for hours on Wednesday.

The Thruway Authority shut down Interstate 90 from Exit 57 at Hamburg to Exit 60 at Westfield around noon while the eastbound lanes remained open.

Eventually, the closure was restricted to Exits 59-60. And then around 4:30 p.m. the Thruway Authority re-opened the westbound Thruway entirely.

The National Weather Service says the latest round of lake-effect storms has dumped up to 18 inches on areas near Lake Erie's eastern shore.
