Bill could restrict unhealthy foods on welfare

A state senator is introducing a bill that would block the use of food stamps on food items that are considered high-end or unhealthy.

New York State Senator Patty Ritchie argues foods like steak and lobster are too costly.

The bill would also stop families using New York’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from buying items like soda and candy.

The Obama Administration is calling for healthy food choices for those who use SNAP benefits as well.

It is requiring stores who serve consumers using food stamps to carry healthier food options.
