State DOT proposed changes to Broadway

The New York State Department of Transportation held an information meeting Tuesday at the Broadway Market, outlining possible changes coming to Broadway.

"We want to make it a multi-modal facility."  Said DOT spokesperson Susan Surdej.  "We want to safely accommodate motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists."

The DOT is looking to transform a portion of Broadway from Fillmore Avenue, just outside of the Broadway Market all the way to Oak Street downtown.  The transformation would include a reduction of traffic lanes to make way for bike lanes, as well as a left turn lane.

Robert Prescott, a cyclist who uses the road says he thinks the changes would be an improvement.

"Just the idea of traffic calming, having a continuous left hand turn lane and two bike lanes, that would greatly improve the safety."

The 2.6 million dollar project is expected to go out to bid in 2018, with a goal of a 2019 completion.

The comment period for the project ends on December 20th.  If you would like to comment you can do so at the NYSDOT website.
