The SPCA of Niagara shelter is over capacity after a raid that took 140 animals from a home on Friday.

The SPCA found 80 cats, 40 rats and 20 rabbits in a home and took all but 40 cats back to the shelter. Veterinary treatment was provided to the cats remaining in the home until they could be moved to the shelter or homes.

The organization is looking for homes for all of the animals.

Officials say there were other animals on the property that were in good condition and well cared for. These animals will stay on the property with regular inspections by the shelter.

"I know our natural reaction is to condemn the owner in cases like this where the animals are so poorly taken care of, but she did attempt to reach out for help," a Facebook post from SPCA of Niagara reads. "We were told she was afraid to contact the shelter in fear that they would all be euthanized."
