Snowplow companies gear up for winter weather

With lake effect snow in the forecast this week, snowplow companies in WNY are fielding last minute calls and preparing trucks for the long winter season ahead.

"We're still doing our fall cleanups and, at the same time, making sure all of our trucks are ready," explained Richard Hoffman. He owns All Seasons Landscaping and Snowplowing on Walden Avenue in Depew. "The next day or two it's snowing so it's kind of hard sometimes to make that transition."

Hoffman and his partner Dylan Sellick said they had been receiving calls from customers Monday looking for pay-per-plow services for this week's storm.

"On our end it's a lot of keeping equipment up to par, making sure everything is ready to go so we're not stuck on the side of the road," Sellick said. "We can get everybody out of their driveways on time. Keep businesses open."

The Better Business Bureau offers the following tips when looking for a snowplow contractor for the season:

  • Look for experience
  • Ask about scheduling
  • Get more than one estimate
  • Ask about insurance
  • Review the contract (get a written contract)
  • Split the payments throughout the season
  • Beware of scams
  • Check with the BBB for background information and reviews
