Snowmobilers urged to use caution on trails

and last updated

Thanks to recent heavy snow, the snowmobile season in WNY is finally getting underway. However, officials still urge caution as trails are not properly groomed yet by local snowmobile clubs.

Erie County Sheriff's Snowmobile Unit had to rescue two males who crashed their snowmobiles in North Collins on Thursday evening.

Deputies found one victim unconscious and the other with a leg injury. Both were taken to ECMC with non-life threatening injuries.

Sheriff's are reminding snowmobile operators that they need to have proper registration and insurance to operate on NYS trails. Riders under 18-years of age must also take a State-approved safety course.

During the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend, NYS is allowing out-of-state snowmobilers to use its trails for free as a way to promote winter tourism.

7 Eyewitness News reporter Ed Reilly takes a closer look at safety issues and the economic benefits of snowmobiling.
