Snowy sidewalks forcing walkers onto Maple Rd

Alicia Walter is one of many people who use the sidewalks along Maple Road in Amherst. Friday her long walk took longer because of the snow covered sidewalks.

“At one point I was like screw it. I went down Maple jumping in between driveways,” Walter said.

We found many of the sidewalks along Maple covered with up to a foot of snow. Amherst Town Highway Superintendent Patrick Lucey blames the lack of plowed sidewalks on broken equipment.

Lucey said Erie County plows pushed all kinds of debris, ice and snow onto sidewalks, causing equipment failure.

“The equipment that was purchased over five years ago now we determining it can't handle the job," Lucey said.

The highway department wants the town to purchase new heavy duty plowing equipment. Lucey said the new equipment he wants could handle what’s on Maple Road sidewalks and more.

Town of Amherst Supervisor Barry Weinstein said there are no immediate plans to purchase the new equipment though it is something they are looking at possibly doing sooner or later.
