AAA and local police's "School's Open -- Drive Carefully" campaign is in full swing.

We know how kids are--full of energy, carefree, and not always paying attention.

But so are some drivers today, especially with smart devices swiping our attention.

The campaign aims to ensure the safety of kids traveling to and from school and reducing the number of school-related pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

AAA research revealed:

  • In 2014, 17 child pedestrians were killed in NYS, five of which were during school transport hours
  • In 2015, one in every five children under the age 15 who were killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians
  • More than a third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods

Erie County Sheriff Howard urges drivers to be attentive and obey traffic signals.
