A settlement has been reached in an upstate New York corrections officer's discrimination claim against Niagara County.
The United States sued the county in 2013, claiming it discriminated against Carisa Boddecker when it forced her to take a leave of absence from her job at the sheriff's office during her pregnancy. The lawsuit said Boddecker wanted to be temporarily re-assigned to a position with no inmate contact.
Under the consent decree announced by the Justice Department on Thursday, the sheriff's office has agreed to offer Boddecker $94,000 in back pay, and to restore the seniority and pension benefits that she lost during her forced leave.
The sheriff's office also must make sure its policies going forward protect employees from discrimination on the basis of sex.
