Seneca Nation speaks out after Trump moves forward with pipeline projects

On Tuesday, President Trump signed an Executive Order to advance the Keystone XL Pipeline and the Dakota Access Pipeline projects.

Both projects were halted during President Obama's administration.

The Seneca Nation sent out a statement about these advancements, calling the order an offense to those who have worked so hard to protect their water and their sacred sites from the pipeline projects.

"Native lands, our rights, and our treaties, whether at Standing Rock or here in Seneca territory, need to be preserved and honored by other governments," said Seneca Nation President Todd Gates. "[This] move by the President raises concerns about legal treaty obligations and the risk of contaminating a precious water supply for millions of Americans. The government should follow through with the full environmental review called for by the Department of the Army just last month."

Gates says the U.S. has a responsibility to have meaningful communication with affected nations.
