U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer plans to meet with the family of a Western New York sailor who's among the 74 fallen American servicemen Schumer wants added to the Vietnam War Memorial.
Schumer is meeting Henderson's mother and brother Tuesday afternoon at their home in Mayville in Chautauqua County. The New York Democrat is asking the Pentagon to add the names to the memorial.
Terry Lee Henderson was born in Buffalo and grew up in Chautauqua County. He was serving aboard the USS Frank E. Evans when the destroyer was split in half after by an Australian aircraft carrier during a 1969 training exercise in the South China Sea. Henderson and 73 other U.S. sailors were killed.
Their names don't appear on the Vietnam memorial in Washington, D.C., because U.S. military officials say the accident occurred outside the war zone.
