The gasoline and propane retailer is just down the street from Tuscarora Elementary School. Students and staff have been evacuated from the school and moved to Niagara Wheatfield High School as a precaution. All students evacuated to the high school are able to be picked up by a parent at any time. Students are also able to remain at the high school until dismissal.
Crews say the tank was filled up Wednesday night. There was a total of 18,000 gallons of propane in the tank.
Several local fire companies, hazmat, police and fire are on scene. They're working with the owner of the propane retailer to truck propane offsite. As soon as the tank is empty, the area will be safe as the windy and rainy weather conditions have helped dissipate the propane. There is no immediate health risk to anyone in the area.
