Scajaquada getting closer to construction

Big changes are coming to the Scajaquada. The NYS Department of Transportation wants the expressway to be more of a boulevard. Crews would remove exits and add traffic lights and walking paths.

At a meeting where the public could weigh in Wednesday night, some worry the new traffic pattern will cause problems to the 198's most beloved neighbor.

“People are just going to use that to bypass Parkside Boulevard and I feel it's going to be unsafe for pedestrians in Delaware Park,” said Mark Lefler.

The DOT says they've listened to neighbors and will continue to do so, but insist their plan works for everyone.

“We want it to be accessible to all users, for pedestrians, for bicyclists. We want it safe for all users and we want it to blend in better with historic Delaware Park,” said Susan Surdej.

The earliest the DOT says they will start working on the multi-phase, multi-year, multi-million dollar plan is this fall.
