Western New York Congressman Chris Collins is responding to President Trump's controversial remarks Tuesday that "both sides" are to blame for the deadly violence over the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia that left one woman dead and more than a dozen other people injured.

Heather Heyer, 32, was killed when a car rammed into a group of people protesting at a gathering of white nationalists.

In a statement to 7 Eyewitness News, Collins, a Trump surrogate, said:

"I strongly condemn the violence we saw in Charlottesville this past weekend. As the son of an officer in General Patton's army that helped save the world from nazism and fascism, I stand against all acts of racism, radicalism, supremacism, anti-Semitism, and intolerance. As I said after Congressman Scalise was shot, we all must be cognizant that our words and actions have strong meaning. We must come together as Americans and tone down our political rhetoric and stand united against all hateful acts."
