Remembering federal judge who desegregated Buffalo schools

He issued the ruling to desegregate Buffalo schools and tonight, western new york is remembering Judge John Curtin.

According to the Buffalo News, Curtin passed away on Friday at the age of 95.

It was 1976, when Judge Curtin ruled on the case of Arthur v. Nyquist.  This led to the integration of the Buffalo Public School District. Curtin claimed the schools were, "deliberately segregated." 

The plaintiffs in the case were a group of parents led by George Arthur, a Buffalo Common Council member.  The defendants were the Buffalo School District, the City of Buffalo and Ewald Nyquist, a former State Education Commissioner.

Funeral arrangements for Judge Curtin have not been released.
