Exactly one week after controversial signs were found posted on benches and above water fountains, students at University at Buffalo are coming together to discuss what one student considered an art project.
“To me it was done by someone that considered it art and felt that there was a legitimate academic purpose behind and I don’t think that there is,” Micah Oliver told 7 Eyewitness News.
Oliver is President of UB’s Black Student Union, the organization hosting the race relations forum.
The forum was a chance for students to discuss how the “white” and “black” only signs made them feel, as well as chance to express concern on how the school administrators responded.
“My first reaction in literally can’t walk to class because I don’t know who put that up and if one person thinks that way,” one student told listeners.
The graduate student behind the project, Ashley Powell, sat down with 7 Eyewitness News to explain the purpose of her project.
“The reason I did this project in the first place was to show people you are trying to avoid a race discussion,” Powell said.
