Protect Your Plants! Freeze warnings and frost advisories in effect for Tuesday morning

Break out the ice scrapers! It's about to get a little frosty here in Western New York.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze for Cattaraugus, Allegany, McKean, and Potter county for Tuesday morning from 11pm Monday night until 9 am Tuesday morning. The rest of Western New York is under a Frost Advisory within the same time period.

Areas near the shores of Lake Erie and Ontario are the least likely to see any frost develop on cars and lawns, as both Lakes are still very warm.

However, towns and cities inland should expect some frost, as temperatures will dip into the low to mid 30s in some spots Tuesday morning.

Any plants you have that are sensitive to frost, bring them indoors. If you can't bring them indoors, place a tarp over the plants.

Watering your plants before a frost also helps to insulate the soil and your plants, as moisture in cold dry weather will stay a little warmer than in dry soil.

Damage to plants happen when temperatures drop below freezing. Water within the cells of the plant freeze and burst. This causes damage to the plant.

The average frost date at the Buffalo Airport is October 19th. Looks as if that will arrive a little early this year.
