A man who was deported following a conviction for an aggravated felony has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after trying to re-enter the United States.

Acting U.S. Attorney James Kennedy says Alfredo DePina, 27, is a citizen of Cape Verde, an archipelago 400 miles off the western coast of Africa, and tried to enter the country on August 23, 2016 by train. Officials say he tried coming from Canada at the Amtrak Train Station, Niagara Falls Port of Entry.

After presenting identification which prompted questions and fingerprinting, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Enforcement Officers confirmed DePina had been previously deported in August 2010.

Officers also found he barred from the country for life after he was convicted in Massachusetts of persuading a minor to have sexual intercourse.
