Most of the GOP field met Thursday night in Des Moines, Iowa for the final debate before the Iowa Caucuses next week. We've teamed up with PolitiFact to put the candidates statements to the test.
So, how truthful were some of the major claims?
Ted Cruz on President Obama downgrading our military
Texas Senator Ted Cruz talked tough about how he would fight terrorism. He claimed the Obama Administration is failing the fight against ISIS, vowing to hunt down terrorist groups wherever they hide.
"Barack Obama right now," Cruz said, "number one, over seven years has dramatically degraded our military."
PolitiFact rating: Mostly False
Our PolitiFact team rated Cruz's statement as mostly false. Cruz's statement does contain an element of truth in that military spending has decreased. but it's inaccurate for Cruz to solely fault President Obama for budget cuts as a result of cuts to both military and non-military spending.
Both Republicans and Democrats share the blame for the budget negotiations that fell apart.
