Police: Scam claiming family members hurt, need money, targeting the elderly

Posted

Police are warning about a phone scam that is targeting the elderly in the Attica area.

Scammers contacted an elderly resident and told that person a grandchild was seriously hurt in a car crash. Police say the scammers then placed a younger adult on the phone, impersonating the grandchild and asked for money to be treated.

The scammers then told the victim to purchase several hundred to several thousand dollars worth of gift cards. The victim was then instructed to call the scammers back and give them the serial numbers from the cards.

Police say this is not the first time scammers have used this tactic.

If the scammers call you, you are asked to contact police.
