Tonawanda police say there was no car found in the Erie Canal after skid marks nearby prompted a search.
Police divers say they searched the area of the canal where tire tracks in the lawn showed a straight path to the water.
According to officials, someone walking along the canal called police around 7:15 p.m. after seeing the tracks.
Police say there was a similar incident about five years ago in the same area. That time they say they found a car in the water with a boy inside. This previous incident caused police to err on the side of caution this time around, according to the City of Tonawanda Captain Fredric Foels.
