New York State Police have released the name of the woman killed in a crash on the Thruway in Lancaster.

Investigators say Dr. Ellen Volpe, 45, of Rochester was heading westbound on the I-90 around 9:45 Thursday morning when her vehicle was hit from behind by a Freightliner box truck between exits 48a and 49.

The impact caused Volpe's 2009 Honda to strike several other vehicles.

Volpe was pronounced dead at the scene.

7 Eyewitness News has learned that Volpe is a nursing faculty member at University at Buffalo.

Marsha Lewis, Dean of the School of Nursing issued this statement:

"The School of Nursing and entire UB community is shocked and saddened by this terrible news. Ellen was a beloved professor if the School of Nursing and a very talented teacher and researcher. She will be greatly missed."

One other person involved in the crash was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not announced any charges against the truck driver.

The crash remains under investigation.
