You may have seen this photo circulating on social media, of a police cruiser parked in a handicapped spot at Wegmans. After it was sent to us, we reached out to Amherst Police to ask why this police cruiser was parked in that spot.

We were told that the officer was responding to a call of a woman's purse being stolen, and the suspect was still in the area. Amherst Police tell 7 Eyewitness News that the officer had to choose between parking in the fire lane or parking in a handicapped spot, and chose the parking spot.

Police tell us that according to protocol, the officer should have parked in the fire lane. The officer has been instructed to park in the fire lane when responding to any future calls.
