State police seek new leads in 40-year-old cold case

New York State police are republishing details of a 1978 unsolved homicide in hopes of uncovering new leads on the nearly 40-year-old cold case.

Stephen Bender and Michael Forness were found murdered on February 6, 1978 at the Wing Hollow Ski Corporation in the town of Allegany.

Both Bender, 30, and Forness, 29, were employees at Skiing destination.

Their bodies were found in the early morning hours, shot multiple times.

A floor mounted safe had been removed from the Ski Lodge on the property and contained an estimated $18,000 in currency.   The empty safe was later recovered beneath the Vandalia Bridge in the Allegheny River. 

Numerous leads were examined and an extensive search of the surrounding area was conducted.

To this day, the identity of the perpetrators of this crime are unknown.
