A Buffalo Police officer is facing charges for allegedly leaving his young children home alone when a fire broke out.

Last February, a fire broke out in the middle of the afternoon at a home on Burgard Place, causing $50,000 in damage to the home. The cause was never released by police but initial reports indicated children may have been playing with matches.

Now a police officer is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Larry Muhammad allegedly left his children, ages 5 and 8, home alone. They were there by themselves when the fire started.

The police report says that these actions were “not only harmful to [the children’s] mental state but a very real physical danger to [the children’s] well being.”

Muhammad has been on the police force since 2012.
