Police have arrested a man who robbed a woman while she was in an ATM lobby at a Cheektowaga bank.

The 53-year-old victim was at the Citizens Bank ATM on Transit Road late Thursday night when a man ran up to her. He flashed a silver handgun and demanded her PIN number.

Police say the man tried unsuccessfully to use the victim’s ATM card to withdraw cash before fleeing.

An alert clerk at a nearby store saw a suspicious man pull up at an ATM at a NOCO station at Transit and Como Park Boulevard. The man ran into the store and then ran out, so the witness wrote down the plate number of the truck the man was driving.

That plate number was given to police who found the truck parked near Transit and French roads. Lancaster Police then found the suspect, 31-year-old Michael Johnson, in the parking lot at Tops.

Police say a silver handgun was found in the grass along the sidewalk on Transit Road.

Detectives are investigating whether the East Aurora man is responsible for a similar robbery in Hamburg where a man stole cash from a drive-up ATM while a driver was in his vehicle.

Johnson is charged with second degree robbery, criminal use of a firearm and third degree criminal possession of a weapon.
