Authorities say two people are recovering from dog bites after the pit bull they were dog sitting attacked them inside their suburban Rochester home.

Police in the town of Gates tell local media that a man was asleep Saturday night when the dog attacked him, biting him in the face and head. Officers say a woman who tried to stop the dog was then bitten on the forearm.

Police say the couple was taken to a hospital where they received stitches for their injuries.

Officers seized the pit bull and are holding it for 10 days to ensure the dog doesn't have rabies.

Police say they've been talking to the dog's owner, but no final determination has been made on the pet's fate.
