A man who was briefly trapped inside inside his vehicle in the Niagara River off Grand Island has been charged with driving while intoxicated and several traffic violations.

Firefighters from the Grand Island Fire Company rescued 44-year-old Jeff Silverthorn.

The sheriff's office reports his car went into the river at East River Road and Ransom Road and was 100-feet from shore once firefighters got to him and walked him to shore.

Silverthorn is said to be okay but he was taken to ECMC to be treated for hypothermia.  He was reportedly uncooperative with officers, and is now facing charges.  The sheriff's office sent the Drug Enforcement Division to the scene, and an investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The car was towed out of the water.
