Two people escaped an overnight house fire along the 400 block of Voorhees Avenue in North Buffalo.

Buffalo firefighters responded to the home just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and found heavy fire on the first floor, spreading up the outside of the home to the second floor.

Division Chief Peter Kertzie said most of the fire was confined to the first floor, but the heat from the fire melted and baked a lot of the second floor.

Two occupants of the home were able to escape the fire unharmed. They will be assisted by the Red Cross.

7 Eyewitness News has learned from investigators that the home had just undergone an extensive remodel - mostly around the kitchen area where investigators think the fire may have started.

"I'm not aware as to what the remodeling would have to do with the fire, but our investigators are taking a look at it now.  We have a low spot that it looks it might have centered around and they're taking a look at it," said Kertzie.

Total damage to the home was estimated to be around $120,000.
