Groups across Western New York are receiving funding from the State the Regional Economic Development Council Awards held by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The grants total $900,000 and 11 organizations across the area will benefit.

One of those groups is the WNY Women’s Foundation Inc. They will receive $100,000 toward their MOMS program. It will educate single moms in poverty and place them in jobs.

“Sizable number of women living in poverty through an education that will allow them to get a job. If they can get a job they can get themselves and their family out of poverty,” Sherri Scavone with the WNY Women’s Foundation said.

Another group receiving money is the Catholic Charities Immigration and Refugee program. This money will go toward training these people in the hospitality industry. This will bring training and jobs to 48 long-term unemployed workers in Western New York.

“So it's a great way for people who have a skill set in language to acquire a skill set and employers to get people who are ready when they walk in the door,” Ann Brittian with Catholic Charities said.

This is not only a job training program but those involved said the people will get placed in a job once their education is completed.
