It's Armed Forces Week in Western New York.

On Sunday, Congressman Brian Higgins joined local members of the United States military at Buffalo Riverworks to kick off this year's opening ceremony.

Attendees were treated to music from the American Legion Band of the Tonawanda's, a military color guard and the announcement of this year's art competition winner.

"It's an opportunity for us to give thanks and gratitude for their extraordinary service and to remember that as a nation we have an obligation to each other as they have given to us and we have an obligation to those veterans who are returning from conflict today from Afghanistan and Iraq, to take care of our own," said Congressman Higgins.

The opening ceremony is just the beginning of a week full of events.
