A small dog is recovering in the care of the Niagara SPCA after he was found with severe matting.

Officers with the Niagara Falls Police Department found the dog on Frontier Avenue near 85th Street around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The SPCA says it appears he hadn't been out on the streets for long. Despite the matted fur, the SPCA reports his fur was clean and did not have much debris. He is described as "very friendly."

Unleashed Pet Grooming worked on the dog for two hours on Thursday, removing more than one pound of matted fur. The SPCA estimates it has been more than a year since the dog was shaved.

The Niagara SPCA is hoping someone recognizes the dog. Anyone with information is asked to call (716) 731-4378 ext. 302. All calls are confidential.
