One injured in fire at Marina Vista apartments in Buffalo

Firefighters battled a two-alarm high-rise fire at the 13-story Marina Vista apartments at the foot of Hertel Avenue.

The fire was called in around 10:15 p.m. and arriving crews found fire in a 12th floor apartment.

Engine 26 rescued Sister Ruth Penska from the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart from the apartment with the assistance of Ladder 13.  The elderly woman was taken to Erie County Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.

The Buffalo Fire Commissioner tells 7 Eyewitness News the victim suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns as well as smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Damages were initially estimated to be $150,000. The estimate accounts for smoke damage on the 11th floor and water damage on floors 10, 11 and 12.

The Red Cross is helping 15 people who live in the building.
