Open enrollment for health plans under the Affordable Care Act is underway and some people in Western New York might be finding a jump in their premiums.  New York State's Department of Financial Services approved rate increases ranging on individual plans from 12 to 20 percent for insurers available in Erie County.

DFS approved rate increases of 11.6% for Fidelis, 15.4% for Blue Cross Blue Shield and 19.6% for Independent Health.

New York State Department of Health said the amount of tax credits changes each year and "many individuals will find that they are eligible for increased federal financial assistance".

Open enrollment runs from November 1, 2016 through January 31, 2017.

An analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation looked at premium increases in a major city for each state.  In New York City, the premium increased by 24%, but that increase was covered by tax credits for individuals who qualified.
