NYS DEC: Tonawanda Coke shutdown complete

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the safe completion of shutdown operations at the Tonawanda Coke facility Tuesday.

According to the DEC, all coke ovens are empty and the gas lines have been completely purged. 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and DEC remain on site to assess environmental conditions and investigate contamination of the site.

The DEC will continue to provide updates to the public on the progress of the cleanup of the site.
