The North Tonawanda School Board voted to approve a school property tax exemption for veterans Wednesday evening.

Veterans who live in North Tonawanda will see a reduction in the school property taxes if they qualify under certain criteria. The amount of the tax reduction will depend upon the veteran's level of service in the military.

For example, the level of tax exemption would be higher for someone who was awarded an expeditionary medal, or was disabled in combat, than someone who actively served during a period of war but did not earn a medal or become disabled.

The veterans' spouses and un-remarried spouses of deceased wartime veterans also qualify for this tax exemption.

According to the School Board, the most any one resident can save is $58 per tax year. Non-veteran residents will see a $27 surcharge on their taxes to fund the veteran's exemption.
