It could have been a major blow for public transportation in western New York, but it now looks like money from Washington for the NFTA will be coming after all.
Senator Charles Schumer and the western New York congressional delegation have managed to stop a proposed change in the way federal transportation money is distributed. The law will stay the same now and more federal dollars will go to high density areas in the northeast, while the south and west get less cash because fewer people live there.
Schumer says had the change been made, the NFTA would have lost more than $21 million in aid over the next six years.
