Senator Charles Schumer is re-elected Tuesday over candidate Wendy Long.

According to AP, Schumer is in line to succeed retiring Nevada Senator Harry Reid as leader of Senate Democrats next year. This means Schumer is slated to become the majority leader if Democrats take the Senate.

AP reports Schumer has not had a serious competitor since defeating incumbent Senator Alfonse D'Amato in 1998.

Long challenged Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in 2012 with another big loss, according to an AP report.

This is Schumer's fourth term in the Senate.
