On June 3, 1969, the USS Frank E. Evans collided with the allied flagship of the Royal Australian Navy, HMAS Melbourne, while engaged in a joint war exercise that had ties to the Vietnam conflict. A total of 74 Americans were killed in the disaster off the coast of South Vietnam.
The memorial is part of the USS Frank Evans military reunion taking place on Friday and Saturday in and around Buffalo.
